Lake Wakatipu

Lake Wakatipu is la glacier lake located in the southwest of the Otago region. It is an inland lake, or finger lake, which has an area of 290 km2 making it the country’s third largest lake. Lake Wakatipu is 80 km long and is very deep- its floor is below sea level with a maximum depth of 380 metres. The area is well known for its scenery surrounded by beautiful mountains. The lake is habitat for longfin eel, salmon, rainbow trout and brown trout, as well as several bird species such as black-billed gull and mallard. Lake Wakatipu has also been used as a backdrop for several scenes in the movie “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.”

Filming of Lord of the Rings movies mostly took place in New Zealand. The fictional location of Amon Hen was filmed in the areas of Lake Wakatipu.
