Kraton (Palace) of Jogjakarta

Kraton of Jogjakarta is a palace complex in the city, and is the main seat of Sultan of Jogjakarta and his family. It is also the cultural centre for the Javanese people and houses a museum displaying the family’s artifacts. The palace was built in the mid 18th century by Prince Mangkubumi. In June 1812, the city was attacked by the British, the palace was burned down, and the royal was subjugated to British colonial authority.

Most of the kraton’s current form was built by Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII, who led the city from 1921 to 1939. It suffered from the 2006 earthquake but has since been subsequently rebuilt again.

Today, the kraton is also used for cultural performances such as: gamelan (music), wayang (shadow puppet) shows and dance performances.
