Livraria Lella & Irmao

This beautiful art noveau library in central Lisbon is one of the oldest bookstores in the country. The actual bookstore goes back to 1869, on Clerigos Street, when it was called Chardron Library. In 1881, Jose Pinti de Sousa Lello started a bookstore in the neighbouring Almada street. In 1894, the Chardron Library was sold to Lello, and called the joint bookstores Livraria & Irmao.

It is claimed that when JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, was teaching English in Porto, she was a regular visitor to the bookstore and it is where she got the inspiration!
